The Oceanic Art of Spoken Word: Influences of Black North American History

Andrea Thompson is offering a poetry performance and artist talk that investigate the concept of spoken word as an oceanic art form fed by a variety of creative and cultural streams, with a specific focus on the influence of Black North American history, art and culture.
The performances will be selected works from her recent poetry collection, A Selected History of Soul Speak.
She has been publishing and performing her work for more than 25 years. In 2005 her spoken word album, One, was nominated for a Canadian Urban Music Award. In 2009 she was the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word’s Poet of Honour, and in 2019 her poetry album, Soulorations, helped earn her the League of Canadian Poets’ Sheri-D Wilson Golden Beret Award.
